“Science and research needs to happen at the university systems where there is unbiased approach. Research paid for by industry can potentially have a conflict of interest to get results that “favor” that industry. I don’t know specific programs that I would prioritize funding.”

“I think there can be many opportunities for public and private collaboration. This is a great way to maximize tax dollars and really achieve the outcomes that we are seeking for jobs and the workforce.”

Q15 Legislative appropriations for Nebraska’s public universities have not kept pace with inflation, and state universities are now being asked to further reduce their budgets (Peal, 2026). What role should the Legislature play in providing funding for higher education? What policies, if any, would you support to balance the state budget while also supporting Nebraska’s research capacity and student opportunities?

Investment in Higher Education

“Investing in education is extremely important for our future. Legislative appropriations have not kept up with inflation for many areas not just public universities. All state dollars come from our tax payers and we have to really be careful on what we spend those funds on. Declining birthrates are effecting our education system K through higher education. There will have to be changes made because of this. The Nebraska legislature does need to provide funding for our university system and we need to work together to ensure that we are maximizing the impact with the tax dollars that are invested.”

Q16 What role do you believe science, research, innovation, and STEM workforce development should play in Nebraska’s economy, state revenues, and accountable investments in the infrastructure and services that improve quality of life?

Jobs and Workforce

“I think STEM workforce development is a great path for students to go into as it results in high paying and stable jobs. This will then help with the Nebraska economy.”

“One way that we can see if a policy is achieving what is should be is using The Nebraska Statewide Workforce & Educational Reporting System (NSWERS). This system captures the data on Nebraska kids all through education system to the workforce and we need to use this data to make targeted policy decisions. We also need to use it to look back and make changes if necessary.”
