Q1 America has a growing artificial intelligence (AI) industry, supporting cutting edge innovation and reshaping businesses, but raising concerns about education, ownership, and security. Application of AI technology has increased the demand placed on data centers, controversial for their resource use (such as water and land) and raising utility costs. What are your policy positions in regards to data centers and AI? What sources of evidence informed these positions?

Artificial Intelligence

It is imperative that we maintain oversight of Data Centers and the use of AI. The use of our natural resources should be carefully monitored by the public. How we control this technology now will pay dividends in the future. There is evidence coming out regarding the effect on education, privacy and security. There seems to be plenty of issues to be concerned about surrounding Data Centers and AI.

KEYWORDS: Oversight. Control. Future.

Q2 Making the US competitive in the bioeconomy (using technology applied to renewable biological resources to produce food, energy and industrial goods) requires innovation and investments in business, academia and government. Please describe policies you will support, if any, that relate to workforce development in Wisconsin’s strengths such as agriculture, biotechnology, and energy; and explain their rationale.

Jobs and Workforce

I would continue to support “The Wisconsin Idea” which began in 1912. Providing grants for research that benefit us in so many different areas of our lives. Continuing the progress through the 21 Century.

Q3 Wisconsin’s public K-12 education systems have seen a significant decline in the past two decades, with more than 600 public schools closing and statewide student enrollment dropping 7%. These impacts have been especially pronounced in Wisconsin’s many rural counties, where opportunities for STEM education are already fewer. What policies, if any, would you support to improve K-12 education for students across Wisconsin?

K-12 Science Education

We need to fund our public schools with the resources needed to provide a quality education. Maybe one of the reasons for the decline in enrollment is because of the disparity in the Shared Revenue Formula. Also, the non public schools do not have the same mandates as the public schools.

KEYWORDS: Resources. Quality. Mandates

Q5 If elected, in what capacities would you refer to scientists when you are deciding how to vote on a policy?

Trust in Science

I will always look to the professionals and their expertise when making any decision.

KEYWORDS: Professionals. Expertise. Decision.

Q7 Wisconsin has faced an increasing number of infectious disease outbreaks in recent years, for instance with rising numbers of measles and avian influenza cases that threaten human health and agricultural industry, respectively. What policies, if any, would you support to manage the burden of infectious disease in the state and respond to future outbreaks?

Public Health

While some diseases were thought to be eradicated or nearly eradicated. It was only because of decades administering vaccines on a global scale. As much as I may appreciate the right for people to make their own choices, the overall health of the masses needs to be taken into consideration. The CDC has made recommendations based on years of science and research. We should continue following the CDC recommendations because all that research has saved millions of lives.

KEYWORDS: Eradicated. Vaccines. CDC
