RepublicanQ1 What advisory mechanisms will you implement to ensure that evidence and scientific findings play a crucial role in your policymaking process?
“Peer-reviewed articles are always a good place to start. But my main approach will be to make sure that I read or meet with scientists on both sides of an important debate or question before making a decision that weighs in on scientific inquiry.”
Q5 What are your opinions on the current state of science literacy, and how could K-12 education standards be adapted to form a better public understanding of and relationship building in science?
“My sense is that, along with literacy in most subjects, scientific literacy is poor. K-12 is not my area of expertise, but making sure we should start by focusing on the basic mechanics of science. What are physics, chemistry, and biology? How do they explain the world around us? What are important subfields of science? And importantly, what is scientific inquiry and debate, and how do we participate in it?”
